FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), commonly called the 'strip technique', is a hair transplant method in which a long, narrow strip of donor scalp is surgically excised and dissected under microscopy into individual follicular units, which are then implanted into the recipient area. FUT is the older of the two main hair-transplant approaches (preceding FUE) and remains the technique of choice for very large graft counts in a single session, when donor density is limited, or when trichophytic donor closure is sought to minimise scar visibility.

### FUT vs FUE — which is better?

Neither is categorically better. FUT offers higher graft yield per session and better follicular unit preservation; FUE offers no linear scar and faster donor-area recovery. The choice depends on the number of grafts needed, donor density, hair style preference (short hair favours FUE), and surgeon experience with each technique.

### Will the FUT scar be visible?

A linear scar approximately 1-2mm wide is always created in FUT. With modern trichophytic closure, hair grows through the scar making it much less visible. With hair length covering the donor area (typically Grade 2 or longer) the scar is usually not visible at all. With very short hair (Grade 1 or shaved), the scar can be visible.

### Why is the maximum graft count higher with FUT?

FUT allows extraction of a single contiguous strip of donor scalp, from which technicians can dissect every follicular unit under microscopy. FUE extracts each unit individually using punches, which is much slower and limits how many grafts can be safely extracted in one session.

### Can I have FUT after I have already had FUE?

Yes, although the existing FUE donor-area depletion may limit what's available. Some patients have multiple sessions of mixed techniques over years.

### How long does the FUT recovery take?

Donor area soreness and tightness for 1 week. Sutures or staples removed at 10-14 days. Most patients return to office work after 3-7 days; manual or contact-sport work requires 2-4 weeks. Final result at 12-18 months.

### Will I need to shave my whole head for FUT?

No — FUT only requires shaving of the narrow strip in the donor area, which is hidden by the surrounding longer hair. FUE typically requires the full donor area to be shaved short, which is more visible in the immediate post-operative period.

### Will the FUT scar widen over time?

Most well-closed FUT donor scars (1-2mm wide initially) stay narrow if standard closure with trichophytic edge is used. Scar widening is more likely in patients with thin scalp skin, patients who exercise heavy upper-body within the first month, or with very large strip widths. Revision (scar excision) can be performed if widening is cosmetically significant.

### Can FUT and FUE be combined in the same session?

Yes — combination FUT/FUE is sometimes used to maximise graft yield in single-session procedures, particularly in patients with extensive baldness. The donor strip is taken first, then additional FUE grafts are extracted from the remaining donor area. This is more demanding for the surgical team and not universally offered.
